Transformation Plan for the District Heating Network, Leverkusen

Paving the Way for a Climate-Neutral Heating Supply With a Funded Transformation Plan

The retrofitting of existing heating networks is a crucial step towards a climate-neutral heat supply. For the district heating network in Leverkusen-Opladen, we have laid the groundwork for developing a concrete decarbonisation pathway and ensuring that the heat supply is climate-neutral by 2045 at the latest.

On behalf of GEWAG Wohnungsaktiengesellschaft Remscheid, Stadtwerke Remscheid and EWR GmbH are investigating options for the transformation of the Leverkusen-Opladen district heating network. The neighbourhood served by the scheme is characterised by a diverse building stock: the buildings, most of which were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, comprise rented flats, owner-occupied flats and detached houses.

Funding as the foundation for the heating transition

The Federal Funding Scheme for Efficient Heating Networks (BEW) supports the transformation of existing heating networks and provides important incentives for their decarbonisation. Our team at MorgenGrün has successfully submitted the funding application for the heating network under BEW Module 1, ‘Transformation Plan’. This has laid the financial foundations for a detailed examination of potential development pathways towards a climate-neutral heat supply in the long term.

Ensuring technical requirements are met

One particular challenge was to carefully review the eligibility criteria for the grant and to fully meet the technical requirements of the funding programme. MorgenGrün assessed the relevant framework conditions, prepared the necessary information for the grant application and successfully completed the application process.

A clear roadmap for a climate-neutral heating supply

The transformation plan is intended to set out a concrete decarbonisation pathway for future heat generation. The focus is on the increased use of renewable energies and the potential utilisation of waste heat. In this way, the transformation of the district heating network can contribute, in the long term, to reducing CO₂ emissions and ensuring the success of the heating transition.

We are proud that our successful funding application has enabled us to take the first important step towards the sustainable development of the district heating network. The project lays the foundations for developing a sustainable and climate-neutral heat supply for the neighbourhood in Leverkusen-Opladen.
