With its ‘University Medicine 2025’ master plan, Münster University Hospital (UKM) has created a visionary basis for the modernisation and expansion of its campus. With over 70 buildings of different ages and uses, both extensive refurbishments and new buildings are on the agenda. The aim is to ensure the highest standards in patient care and research - while taking ambitious climate policy goals into account.
An integrated approach to energy efficiency and sustainability.
The Innovation branch of ZWP Ingenieur-AG, the predecessor of MorgenGrün, developed an ‘Energy and Media Masterplan’ in 2016, which sets the course for a sustainable and efficient energy supply at the UKM. The project focussed on energy efficiency, flexibility, future viability and operational safety. The result is an integrated overall concept that fits seamlessly into the planned construction and refurbishment sequence and maximises synergy potential.
The concept includes, among other things:
Ice storage and combined heat and power generation: seasonal ice storage for low temperatures, combined heat and power generation for high temperatures.
Climate neutrality: Reduction of CO2 emissions by two thirds compared to the current level, with economically viable conditions.
Flexibility: Optimisation of cooling generation through ice storage to adapt to dynamic electricity tariffs and changing demand.
Update due to the 2022 energy crisis
In light of the energy crisis and uncertainties regarding the gas supply, the Innovation branch (now MorgenGrün) updated the 2022/2023 master plan, incorporating current energy prices, increased construction costs and alternative storage technologies such as battery and hydrogen storage into the analysis. The analyses confirmed the economic viability of the original approach, while additional options for load shifting and grid stability were examined.
Particular attention was paid to the precise dimensioning of the ice storage systems. These not only increase the efficiency of cooling generation, but also open up considerable savings potential by reducing power peaks.
A model for sustainable energy supply
The project at Münster University Hospital is an example of how the art of engineering and a spirit of innovation can create sustainable solutions for complex infrastructures. By combining a sustainable energy supply with economic efficiency, the UKM is setting a new benchmark for large-scale medical projects.
